Location
Halibut Point State Park | Rockport, MA
Halibut Point State Park in Rockport, MA, sits at the northeastern tip of Cape Ann, surrounded by water on three sides. The quarry and the ocean define the boundaries of this space, and the water within them become crucial parts of the experiences to be had on the site. This idea of the influence of water on the site and how it flows and moves around the slope, while still remaining a dynamic entity defined by its surrounding contexts, became driving principles for my project design. Water is constantly in motion, ranging from slow and steady flow to rapid and turbulent currents. This unpredictability of water allows for the possibility of a unique experience every time the site is encountered, allowing visitors to learn something new about the people around them, their natural surroundings, and perhaps even themselves.
The three buildings are representative of the different interactions promoted by this space, interactions between people, between nature, and within ourselves. There are spaces that encourage social interaction and foster a sense of community, as well as areas to connect with nature, and places that encourage personal reflection and contemplation. The possibility for water to create unique experiences for groups of people inspired multiple vehicles of descent down the slope, seen through the beam systems, the ramps, and the outdoor stairs/water feature. By creating the opportunity to have these individual or shared interactions with the site, this becomes a place to adapt to a wide variety of spiritual needs, and encourage visitors to explore and experience at their own pace.
