UMASS POND CROSSING
Date
October 2023
Location
Amherst, MA | University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus Pond
Project type
Schematic Design
The UMASS Campus Pond is a key part of it’s premises, image, and history. In approaching this project, those were all concerns that heavily informed my design process. In terms of the campus, walkability is an ongoing issue, and the pond being in the core presents a great opportunity to help relieve some of that pedestrian traffic. The pond also gives some iconography to UMASS, it’s a memorable location that could be the prime attraction to the campus, especially considering an addition of a bridge that emphasizes it’s surrounding legacy buildings. Historical precedents are an added concern, with the preservation of land being a factor and also this restoration of the path of Ellis Way. Through these three lenses, this bridge aims to increase accessibility, create a model image of campus, and further sustain historical precedents.
